Our local Operations & Maintenance (O&M) team from UGL has been looking after a flock of 1,000 local merino sheep on site since late 2024.
The sheep have been helping to keep the grass down, thanks to the efforts of our O&M Site Manager, Thomas Mason, who manages a team of three onsite staff.
"The sheep settled in quickly and have been rotated off and on the site, and are allowed to move around freely. This prevents overgrazing," Thomas said.
"It is a great agrisolar initiative that makes use of the solar farm for traditional agricultural purposes," he said.
"By keeping the grass down, the sheep assist us with our fire prevention management strategies."
The initiative supports local sheep production, providing more access to additional land to run more sheep and providing a dual land use that supports local agricultural activity.
Sheep grazing is also good for energy generation, preventing undergrowth from interfering with PV generation activities.
The solar farm has been generating renewable energy for close to one year, drawing on more than 200,000 solar panels to produce enough clean, green energy to power the equivalent of 50,000 Australian homes.
